Quick answer

Local SEO in the UK costs £250-£1,000 a month from a dedicated agency, £40-£80 an hour from a freelancer, or £49-£199 a month when it is bundled into a managed website plan. Anything under £150 a month standalone is usually automated directory submissions, which stopped working years ago.

Local SEO in the UK costs £250-£1,000 a month from a dedicated agency, £40-£80 an hour freelance, or £49-£199 a month when it comes bundled with a managed website plan. Under £150 a month standalone, you are almost always buying automated directory submissions, which stopped moving rankings years ago.

The price spread is enormous for what is, on paper, the same service. So it is worth knowing what separates a £250 month from a £900 one, because it is not always what the invoice implies.

What the price bands actually contain

Price What you typically get Verdict
£49-£99/mo standalone Automated directory listings, a report nobody reads Avoid. This is the bad end.
£250-£450/mo Google profile upkeep, a few location pages, reviews, basic reporting Fine for a quiet local market
£500-£1,000/mo All of the above plus content, local link building, competitor work Right for competitive cities and multi-location
£49-£199/mo bundled Local SEO inside a managed website plan Best value if you also need the site handled

That last row confuses people, so it is worth explaining rather than glossing over. Bundled local SEO is cheaper for the same reason a phone contract with a handset is cheaper than buying both separately: the provider is already hosting your site, already in your Google profile, already writing your pages. The local SEO is marginal work on top of a relationship that already exists. Standalone, the provider has to set all that up from scratch just to start.

Why the cheap end does not work

For about a decade, local SEO could be gamed by submitting your business to hundreds of directories. Software did it in bulk. That is what most £99 packages still are, because the software is cheap and the reports look busy.

Google stopped rewarding that a long time ago. What it rewards now is harder to automate: a genuinely active Google Business Profile, real reviews arriving steadily, business details that match everywhere, pages about actual places written by someone who knows them, and a site that loads fast on a phone.

None of that can be done by a script for £99 a month across a thousand clients. So when you see that price, the question is not whether it is good value. It is what the person is actually doing for the money.

The report is not the work

Cheap SEO packages are usually excellent at reporting and poor at doing. A twelve-page PDF full of graphs arrives every month and nothing on your site has changed. Ask any provider what they changed last month, specifically, on your site and profile. If they answer with metrics instead of actions, you have your answer.

What you are paying for, by hours

Strip the marketing away and local SEO is people-hours. Most single-location UK businesses need roughly:

  • Google Business Profile upkeep: 1-2 hours a month. Posts, photos, Q&A, checking nobody has edited your details, responding to reviews.
  • Content: 2-4 hours a month for a location or service page written properly.
  • Reviews: under an hour if the request process is automated, more if it is not.
  • Technical and on-page: an hour or two, more in the first month.
  • Link building: the most variable. Local press, sponsorships, supplier listings. Slow work.

Call it four to eight hours a month. At £40-£80 an hour that is £160-£640, which is exactly why the agency band sits where it does. Anyone charging £99 for eight hours of skilled work is not doing eight hours of skilled work.

Key takeaway

Price local SEO by hours, not by package name. Ask how many hours a month your retainer buys and what happens in them. A provider who cannot answer that is selling you a name for a thing, not the thing.

The order that gets results fastest

If your budget is tight, sequence matters more than spend. This is the order I would run it in for almost any local business:

  1. Google Business Profile first. It is free, it moves fastest, and for “near me” searches it matters more than your website does. Hours, categories, services, photos, the lot. Results can show in days rather than months.
  2. Reviews second. Ask every happy customer. Nothing else gives you as much for as little money.
  3. Business details consistent everywhere. Same name, address and phone number on every listing. Tedious, one-off, necessary.
  4. Location and service pages third. Real pages for real places, once the free wins are banked.
  5. Links last. Slowest, hardest, and pointless before the first four are done.

Businesses that skip to step four and pay an agency for content while their Google profile still lists the wrong hours are spending money in the wrong order. Not showing on Google Maps covers the profile side, and what is local SEO covers the basics.

Be realistic about timing

Three to six months before rankings move meaningfully. That is the honest range, and how long SEO takes explains why: Google needs to see sustained signals, not a burst of activity.

The profile side is faster. Fix a wrong category or add missing services and you can see a difference inside a fortnight. That gap between the two is worth knowing, because a provider who promises fast results is often quietly counting profile fixes as SEO wins.

What we charge, for comparison

Our plans include local SEO rather than selling it separately: £49 Essentials, £99 Complete and £199 Premier, monthly, no contract. For most single-location UK businesses the £99 tier is the right one, with £199 making sense once ads or email marketing come into it.

That is deliberately cheaper than a standalone retainer, for the reason above. We are already running the site. The pricing page has the scope of each, and if you would rather just say what you do and where, send us a line and we will tell you which tier fits and whether you even need the bigger one.

Whoever you go with, ask for the hours and the actions. Everything else in an SEO pitch is decoration.

Frequently asked questions

How much does local SEO cost in the UK?

£250-£1,000 a month on a standalone agency retainer, £40-£80 an hour from a freelancer, or £49-£199 a month when bundled into a managed website plan. Most single-location small businesses need somewhere between two and six hours of real work a month, which is where those numbers come from.

Is cheap local SEO at £99 a month worth it?

Standalone, usually not. At that price the work is normally automated directory submissions and a monthly report, neither of which affects your rankings now. The exception is when £99 buys local SEO as part of a wider managed plan, because the fixed costs are already covered by the rest of the service.

How long before local SEO works?

Three to six months for meaningful movement, though Google Business Profile fixes can show within days because the profile updates far faster than search rankings. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is either guessing or selling you something that will not last.

What should local SEO actually include?

Google Business Profile optimisation and weekly upkeep, consistent business details across the web, review generation, location pages that name real areas, on-page work on your service pages, and local link building. If a quote does not name most of those, ask what you are paying for.
